How you can submit stories, photos & videos

Users are welcome to submit community news articles, photos and videos for online publication. Visit our Share page for an easy and convenient way to upload your text and/or images. (If you are unable to access the Share page or its upload forms, you also can email your material to ASB-ONLINE-PRODUCERS@gannettnj.com, with "Reader Submission" in the subject line.) We recommend you review our policy summary below to see whether your submission is publishable by us.

Policies for publication

As with any submissions, our Terms of Service (particularly the sections on "Our Right to Use Materials You Submit or Post" and "Responsibility for User-Provided Content") and our Community Rules apply. These policies help guide our editors in deciding if a particular article should or should not be published online. While you should read these policies in their entirety, among their conditions are that you do not impersonate anyone else or misrepresent yourself as something you're not; that you do not post anything unlawful, abusive, libelous or obscene, or encourage others to do something unlawful; that you don't infringe on another's privacy, copyright protection or other rights; and that you refrain from advertising or soliciting products or services for profit. After you submit a story or visual item, our editors may contact you at the e-mail address you listed, or via any other contact information you may provide, if they have any questions about your submission. (They will not provide the public with information about you that you didn't yourself include within the byline, summary, text, image or caption of your submitted article, photo or video.)

What works and what doesn't

If you're unsure how our terms might apply to your item, here are some examples: » We welcome news about community events, including fundraisers that are nonprofit and intended to assist others. But we would generally not publish submissions touting the benefits of a commercial product or service. » We welcome news about local businesses' milestones, such as openings, expansions or anniversaries. But we would generally consider a submission announcing, for example, "our 2-for-1 sale Friday through Sunday" to be advertising and would not publish it. » We welcome news and tips about community issues. But arguments for or against such issues are considered to be commentary and should be submitted as a letter to the editor instead. » We welcome "visual" submissions (photos or videos), but we generally would not publish such an item that a third party holds a copyright on (including in a video's soundtrack), or that depicts something offensive, or that has been "Photoshopped" to alter what's pictured.
