Cops: Rumson man ate pet fish, texted photo of unflushed toilet to victim after
A Rumson man has been charged with cruelty to animals and improper telephone communications, after police in Louisiana said he swallowed a woman’s pet fish and then later texted her a photo of an unflushed toilet to illustrate where the animal had gone, according to a report from ABC-TV affiliate WBRZ in Baton Rouge.Maxwell Taffin, 21, whom the Patch reported Thursday is a graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven High School, was taken into custody on Tuesday by Louisiana authorities for the charges first filed in 2016, more than two years after Taffin failed to appear in person over the matter.According to an arrest warrant obtained by Louisiana State University Police, the victim allowed her ex-boyfriend and two of his friends to stay at her dorm for the weekend of the 2016 Magnolia Bowl — the annual college football game played between rival schools Louisiana State University and the University of Mississippi, according to the published report.More: Rumson elegantly poised mansionMore: Broadway Week: How to claim 2-for-1 ticketsWhen the victim returned to her room after the game on Oct. 22, 2016, she allowed one of the men, Taffin, inside to retrieve his belongings. As Taffin left the room, he remarked to the victim to “check your fish tank,” before he hurried out the door. When the woman checked the tank, she noticed her fish was missing. She later showed police a photo she received from Taffin’s phone number following the encounter, which showed feces in a toilet accompanied by the text: “found your fish,” all according to the report.LSU police later spoke with Taffin, who was 18 then, at which time he admitted swallowing the victim’s pet.“Yeah, I'll be honest with you. I ate (the victim’s) fish,” said Taffin, according to an affidavit as reported. When police asked Taffin about the photo of the toilet sent to the victim, he told them that “a lot of people” had access to his phone because it was not protected by a passcode, the report read.Check out the video above from our sister publication at the York Daily Record to hear about some really bizarre crimes they have covered.
